Netflix is adding 33 new shows and movies to the streaming service this week, and there’s a good variety in the bunch. A new dark miniseries is hitting the platform, alongside an homage to French cinema from an acclaimed director, as well as a few documentaries. Of course, there’s also a notable omission this week: Friday’s Jake Paul vs. Gervonta “Tank Davis” fight has been canceled.
But let’s get back to what you’ll actually be able to watch on Netflix this week. “The Beast in Me” is a new miniseries starring Claire Danes as a grieving mother whose subject for her next book could be a deadly one. Then, there’s “Nouvelle Vague,” Richard Linklater’s love letter to French New Wave cinema and the making of the movie “Breathless.” It’s one of my favorite movies of the year, so don’t miss it.

‘The Beast in Me’

“The Beast in Me” stars Claire Danes as Aggie Wiggs, an acclaimed writer who has been unable to produce a book since the tragic death of her son. When real estate mogul Nile Jarvis (Matthew Rhys) moves in next door, though, suddenly Aggie finds a compelling subject for a new book.
There’s just one issue: Nile might be a murderer. The rich and powerful man has long been suspected of the disappearance of his wife (Brittany Snow). As Aggie gets closer to Nile, she comes to realize just how dangerous he is and that she might already be in too deep.

‘Nouvelle Vague’

“Nouvelle Vague” is the French term for the French New Wave of cinema. This 1950s art movement was a groundbreaking moment in cinema history, and it still influences how films are made today. So perhaps it’s no surprise that acclaimed filmmaker Richard Linklater has chosen to pay homage to it in this comedy-drama, which retells the story of the making of “Breathless,” a French New Wave crime drama by director Jean-Luc Godard and possibly one of the greatest movies ever made.
Having seen this movie for myself in theaters, I can tell you that it doesn’t quite reach the heights of the movie it’s paying tribute to, but it’s an incredible work of art. It oozes style, and the performances from its cast are excellent, particularly Guillaume Marbeck as Jean-Luc Godard, Zoey Deutch as Jean Seberg and Aubry Dullin as Jean-Paul Belmondo. It’s one of my favorite movies of the year and one I hope gets Best Picture consideration come Oscars season.

‘Last Samurai Standing’

When I heard about “Last Samurai Standing,” I declared it “Shogun” meets “Squid Game.” That’s not a comparison I’m pulling out of thin air either, as the show is set in the Meiji period that followed the Tokugawa Shogunate fictionalized in “Shogun,” and is centered around a deadly winner-take-all game, much like “Squid Game.”
Based on the Japanese manga of the same name (known as “Ikusagami” in Japan), “Last Samurai Standing” stars Junichi Okada as Shujiro Saga. A warrior looking to provide for his ailing wife and son, he’s come to the Tenryuji Temple in Kyoto, where he and 291 other warriors will compete for 100 billion yen. There’s just one rule: last samurai standing wins.

‘In Your Dreams’

“In Your Dreams” stars Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as the voice of Stevie. She and her brother, Elliot (Elias Janssen), live a relatively normal life and have to deal with the trials and tribulations that come with it. That includes having to come to terms with your parents splitting up.
But (understandably) Stevie doesn’t want to come to terms with it. Instead, she wants to save her parents’ marriage, and she’s willing to go into the world of dreams to do it. If she and Elliot can find the Sanman (Omid Djalili), they can maybe keep their parents together. But they won’t have to do it alone. They also have the help of Baloney Tony, a lost stuffed animal from Elliot’s childhood.

‘Marines’

“Marines” is a new documentary from Netflix following the members of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). This fighting force is the U.S. military’s “force in readiness” in the Pacific, meaning that if any nation were to attack us from that region, they’d be the first ones on the front lines fighting back.
In this docuseries, Netflix will show you unprecedented access to the unit’s rigorous training regimen, as well as insight into the minds of those tasked with what can become one of the military’s most dangerous assignments at any moment. You can stream the entire four-part series now.

‘Being Eddie’

Eddie Murphy is one of the most famous comedic actors in history. There’s an argument to be made that he’s the most famous, especially during his peak in the 1980s, when he was a star on “Saturday Night Live” and a red-hot movie star. He even put out a gold record at one point.
In “Being Eddie,” two-time Oscar winner Angus Wall paints an intimate portrait of the multi-talented man, covering generations of work and generations of the fans Murphy inspired. You also get guest appearances from Adam Sandler, Arsenio Hall, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Jamie Foxx, Jerry Seinfeld, Kevin Hart, Pete Davidson, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Tracy Morgan, so you definitely won’t want to miss it.

‘Selling The OC’ season 4

Honestly, I thought a new season of “Selling the OC” had already come out. But I took a look and it turns out that a new season of “Selling Sunset” came out last month, not its (also hit) spinoff.
Like the mothership show, though, “Selling the OC” revolves around the Oppenheim Group and the agents that make up the high-end real estate brokerage. Come for the gorgeous views and the stunning houses, stay for the tense drama between the rival agents at the O Group.
